10 Simple Things That Make Stay At Home Mom Life Easier
No one really talks about how mentally exhausting being a stay at home mom is.
Before I became a SAHM, I pictured slower days at home. I imagined playtime, a clean house, home cooked meals, and having extra time to stay on top of things.
What I didn’t picture was how constant it would feel.
The never ending snacks.
The toys that somehow make their way into every room.
The laundry that is never actually done.
The feeling of being busy all day but wondering what you even accomplished.
When I first entered this season of motherhood, some days felt chaotic simply because I didn’t yet have systems that worked for us. I was just winging it and hoping it would get easier.
Over time, I realized something important:
Stay at home mom life didn’t get easier when I tried to do more. It got easier when I started doing things simpler.
Once I started putting small routines and habits into place, our days felt more predictable, our home felt calmer, and I felt less overwhelmed.
These are 10 things that genuinely make my stay at home mom life easier.
If you’re in this season too, I hope at least one of these makes your days feel a little lighter.

1. HAVING A SIMPLE CLEANING ROUTINE
Having a simple weekly cleaning routine completely changed how my home feels. Instead of trying to clean everything every day, I assign small tasks to specific days.
This keeps things manageable and prevents cleaning from taking over my entire weekend.
- MONDAY: BATHROOMS
- TUESDAY: FLOORS
- WEDNESDAY: WINDOWS AND WIPE DOWNS
- THURSDAY: KITCHEN
- FRIDAY: BEDROOMS
Having a plan removes the mental load of constantly wondering what needs to be cleaned.

2. MY DAILY RESET ROUTINE
My daily reset routine is probably the biggest game changer for keeping our home running smoothly.
Every night I focus on just a few tasks:
- Load the dishwasher
- Quick toy pickup
- Wipe kitchen counters
- Start one load of laundry
This helps me wake up to a clean slate instead of yesterday’s mess, which instantly makes mornings feel calmer.

3. TOY ROTATION
Instead of having all toys available all the time, I rotate toys every couple of weeks.
This has helped:
- Reduce clutter
- Make cleanup easier
- Keep my toddler interested in toys longer
- Prevent overwhelm

Storing toys in small baskets makes rotating them out every other week quick and easy.
4. DAILY OUTSIDE TIME
Getting outside everyday helps everyone’s mood, especially mine.
Here are some of the ways we spend time outside:
- Playing in the backyard
- A walk around the neighborhood
- A quick trip to a park
Fresh air almost always resets a hard toddler day.
5. WEEKLY MEAL PLANNING
Meal planning for the week saves me so much daily stress. Instead of figuring out dinner at 4:30 when everyone is tired and hungry, I already know the plan. My husband and I come up with a plan and get our grocery shopping done on Sunday so we are ready for the week.
We like to keep it simple:
- Crockpot meals
- Easy sheet pan meals
- Simple back up meals ready to be heated up
- A protein, a veggie, and a whole grain option
Having a plan also helps me grocery shop faster and avoid extra trips to the store.

6. CURBSIDE GROCERY PICKUP
This is one of my favorite mom hacks for those middle of the week, just need a few items trips.
Grocery pickup saves:
- Time
- Energy
- Impulse spending
- The stress of shopping with toddlers
I order groceries in the morning and pick them up after nap time. It makes a huge difference in my day.
7. GETTING OUT OF THE HOUSE
Even though I consider myself a homebody, I learned I have to leave the house sometimes.
Some of our favorites:
- Library story time
- MyGym
- Playgrounds
- Target runs
- Coffee shop stops
I have a flexible weekly outing schedule that we follow. We don’t stick to it every week, but it does help give me structure to the week and something to look forward to when we need to get out of the house.
8. PLANNING INTENTIONAL ME TIME
This took me a while to learn because mom guilt is real.
But I realized I am a better mom when I also take care of myself.
Sometimes this looks like:
- Reading after bedtime
- Watching a show
- Taking a fitness class (I’ve really gotten in to hot yoga lately)
- Letting my husband take over so I can recharge
Even small moments help prevent burnout.
9. CREATING DIFFERENT ZONES IN THE HOUSE
One thing that helps prevent boredom (for all of us) is simply changing our environment throughout the day.
Instead of staying in one room all day we rotate:
- Morning: Living room play area
- Mid Morning: Outside time
- Afternoon: Bedroom
- Evening: Family time areas (hallway, living room, dining room)
This keeps the day feeling fresh without needing elaborate activities.
Sometimes a change of scenery is all a toddler needs.
10. INVOLVING MY TODDLER IN DAILY TASKS
Instead of trying to do everything during nap time, I started involving my toddler in simple household tasks.
This has helped her learn responsibility while also making my day easier.
She helps with things like:
- Moving laundry from washer to dryer or dryer to basket
- Picking up toys before bedtime
- Carrying small items
- Helping wipe surfaces
It takes a little longer, but it teaches great habits and keeps her engaged while I get things done.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Stay at home mom life got much easier for me when I stopped trying to do everything all the time and instead focused on simple routines that support our daily life.
None of these things are complicated, but together they make our days feel more predictable, peaceful, and manageable.
If you’re in the thick of the toddler years like I am, just know that it’s okay if you’re still figuring out what works. We all are.
Start small. Pick one thing from this list and try it this week. Small changes really do make a big difference over time.
