10 Things To Do With A Toddler When You Need To Get Out Of The House
I always imagined my life as a stay at home mom with slow mornings, a clean house, and lots of sweet moments with my babies. And while these moments definitely exist, what I didn’t realize is how long the days can sometimes feel when you’re home all day with a toddler.
Some days everything is great… and other days you can just feel everyone needs a change of scenery.
I’ve learned that when my toddler starts getting extra clingy, bored, or everything turns into a meltdown, it usually means one thing:
We need to get out of the house.
The good news is you don’t need anything fancy, expensive, or complicated. These are the simple places I rotate through when we just need to reset the day.
1. THE LIBRARY
This is one of my favorite free activities.
Most libraries have:
• Story time
• Toddler play areas
• Music time
• Sensory toys
It’s structured enough to feel productive but relaxed enough if your toddler doesn’t sit still the whole time.
Mom bonus: it’s free and gets you around other adults.

2. THE PARK
When in doubt, head to the park.
Sometimes all my toddler needs is fresh air.
Ideas to mix it up:
• Different parks each week
• Bring snacks
• Bring bubbles
• Short walk after playtime
Sometimes we only stay for 30 minutes, but it’s always worth it.
3. GROCERY STORE TRIP
I used to think errands didn’t count as activities, but toddlers think they do.
Ways to make it fun:
• Let them help put items in cart
• Talk about colors and foods
• Let them hold the list
This turns something you have to do into something helpful.
4. TARGET OR WALMART RUN
This is basically an indoor walking track for moms.
What we do:
• Walk the toy aisle last
• Look at seasonal displays
• Grab one needed item
• Sometimes just browse
You don’t actually have to buy anything, or so I’ve heard.
5. INDOOR PLAY PLACES (MYGYM, LITTLE LAND, ETC.)
These are amazing on:
• Rainy days
• Very hot days
• Low energy mom days
Even once a week can make a big difference.
6. BACKYARD WATER PLAY
When leaving feels like too much work, the backyard counts too.
Simple ideas:
• Water table
• Sprinkler
• Bubbles
• Sidewalk chalk
Sometimes I bring my coffee outside and just sit.
7. COFFEE SHOP/SNACK DATE
Toddlers love being included in “mom things.”
I’ll sometimes:
• Grab myself coffee
• Get her a milk or snack
• Sit for 20 minutes or just go through a drive through
It feels like a mini outing without much effort.
8. WALK AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD
This is a daily must for me since it’s so easy and always works when I need to turn the day around.
Options:
• Stroller walk
• Toddler walks part of the way
• Look for dogs
• Point out cars, flowers, trees
MOM TIP: On days I want to walk a little longer, I bring our Tonie Box along in the stroller. My toddler loves listening to songs or stories, and it keeps her entertained so I can actually turn our walk into a little workout too.
9. ROTATE THROUGH DIFFERENT STORES
Not just Target.
Other ideas:
• Pet store (look at fish)
• Home Depot (look at plants)
• Bookstore kids section
• Dollar store
Toddlers just like seeing new things.
10. VISIT FAMILY OR FRIENDS
Sometimes we just need another adult around.
Since we recently moved, we don’t have family nearby and I’m basically starting over when it comes to finding mom friends. Making time to meet new people can feel overwhelming when you already have so much on your plate.
One small step that helped me was joining our neighborhood Facebook group. I finally worked up the courage to make a simple post asking if any other moms with toddlers wanted to meet up for stroller walks.
Honestly, it felt a little outside my comfort zone, but I reminded myself that there are probably other moms feeling the exact same way.
Even just connecting with one other mom can make a big difference.
If you’re in a similar season, you could try:
• Neighborhood Facebook groups
• Local mom groups
• Library story times
• Church groups
• Playground conversations
You don’t have to build a whole friend group overnight. Sometimes it just starts with one conversation or one walk.
I’m still working on this myself, but putting myself out there felt like a good first step.
MY SIMPLE RULE: ONE “OUTING” PER DAY
I try to plan one small outing per day.
Nothing big.
Nothing stressful.
Just something to keep us from feeling stuck at home.
SOMETIMES GETTING OUT IS FOR MOM TOO
If I’m being honest, sometimes getting out of the house isn’t just for my toddler… it’s for me too.
Being a stay at home mom is beautiful, but it can also feel isolating, especially when you’re in a new place without your usual support system. Some days I don’t feel like packing the diaper bag or loading everyone into the car, but I almost always feel better once we do.
I’ve learned it doesn’t have to be anything big or impressive.
Sometimes it’s just:
• A quick park trip
• Walking the neighborhood
• A library visit
• Saying hi to another mom
Just something to break up the day.
If you’re in a season where you’re figuring this out too, you’re not alone. We’re all just doing our best to create good days for our kids while figuring it out ourselves along the way.
Some days will feel easy.
Some days will feel long.
On the long days, I just ask myself:
“Where can we go for one hour?”
And most of the time… that’s enough to reset both of us.
