10 Toddler Activities That Keep My 2 Year Old Busy (While I Get Things Done)

If you’re home with toddlers all day, you know how hard it can be to get things done.

Between preparing snacks, changing diapers or going potty, and don’t forget the constant “up” requests, even loading the dishwasher can feel like an impossible task.

As a stay at home mom with two under two, I have had to figure out simple activities that keep my toddler busy long enough for me to cook dinner, tidy the house, or even just drink my coffee before the ice melts.

WHAT YOU’LL FIND IN THIS POST

Things you already have at home

THESE ARE THE TODDLER ACTIVITIES THAT WORK THE BEST IN OUR HOUSE

1. COLORING STATION

Tape paper to a table and let them color freely.

I also like to get those Crayola giant coloring pages in my toddler’s favorite characters and I tape it to the paper.

2. STICKER TIME

Reusable puffy sticker books are such a hit at my house.

3. PAINTER’S TAPE ROADS

Put painter’s tape on the floor to make roads for toy cars.

4. TOY ROTATION BIN

Bring out a small bin of toys they haven’t seen recently. I love watching my toddler rediscover interest in an older toy.

MOM TIP: Keep toys in baskets for easy toy rotation swaps.

5. BRING OUT A STACK OF BOOKS

Similar to the toy rotation, I like to take books out of rotation and bring them out when I need to get things done.

6. SET UP ONE OF THEIR FAVORITE TOYS IN A NEW WAY

This kind of depends of what toys you have at home, but get creative with it! Build a tower for their little people toys, or arrange their stuffies like they are at a tea party.

7. COLOR SORTING

Give them a muffin tin, pom poms, and tongs and have them sort them by color.

8. SENSORY BINS

No toddler activity list would be complete without sensory bins. Here are some ideas to fill your bin with:

  • Dry rice, beans, or pasta
  • Kinetic sand
  • Cotton balls
  • Packing peanuts
  • Shredded paper

MOM TIP: If you have wooden puzzles place the pieces in the bin. Other items to include are small toys, tongs, spoons, measuring cups, and/or cookie cutters.

9. LAUNDRY SORTING

If you have a basket of laundry that still needs folding, have your toddler sort the items by color.

10. BUSY BOOK

Busy books are full of activities that toddlers love to do independently.

MOM TIP: If you’re purchasing one, learn from my mistake and pick one with non-detachable parts. Every car ride my toddler wanted to take it and I always ended up with a ton of pieces to pick up off the floor. Thankfully my sister gave her a better one for Christmas.
